“Don’t let the truck out of your sight!” I called.
Malcolm was pushing the moped up to its highest speed while I hung on to his waist.
I wanted to tell Malcolm I was sorry for not believing him, but this didn’t seem like the best time to do it.
The laundry truck had to go fairly slowly in town, and we had no trouble catching up with it.
It was obvious that Malcolm’s moped wasn’t designed to ride more than one at a time. We were squashed together, and there was no place to rest my feet, so I held them out to the side, away from the wheels.
“There!” I hollered above the noise of the motor. “It turned left!”
Malcolm swung the moped around the corner and followed at a safe distance behind the truck, almost a full block.
The truck weaved in and out of traffic all the way across town.
“It’s heading out to the country,” Malcolm called.
“That’s okay,” I said. “Follow it.” Then I thought of something. “Do you think it’ll see us following on the highway?”
“Yeah,” Malcolm said. “I’ll have to pull way back.”
It was almost dark now. Only a thin blanket of pink lay on the western horizon, and the streetlights were winking on overhead. As we sped along the roads taking us out of town, the sound of the moped buzzed in my ears.
Malcolm slowed as the truck pulled onto the highway. I hoped the driver wouldn’t notice he was being followed. The truck’s taillights dimmed as it got farther ahead of us.
“Don’t lose it!” I called to Malcolm.
Malcolm called back something about me being a backseat driver, but I didn’t hear the whole thing because a semi was bearing down on us from behind. I turned around and saw a huge, angry face with grillwork teeth that grimaced furiously at us as if we were annoying gnats.
The semi moved closer and closer, raging down the highway just behind us.
“Can’t you go any faster?” I yelled at Malcolm.
The semi blared its horn so loud I nearly jumped off the back of the moped. I turned around in my seat and gave what I thought was a friendly wave, but the truck blared its horn angrily in response.
“Pull off on the shoulder!” I hollered to Malcolm, hanging on to his waist as tightly as I could. “Let it go ahead of us!”
“We’ll lose the laundry truck!” he yelled back.
“Please, Malcolm! This guy’s going to kill us!”
“We can’t lose the laundry truck!” Malcolm shouted. “We’ve come so far!”
“Why doesn’t this guy go around us?”
The semi driver must have had mental telepathy, because at that moment, he started to do just that. I felt a tremendous relief, but only for a moment, because Malcolm decided he didn’t want the semi to pass us.
He swerved us out to the left in front of the roaring truck.
“Malcolm!” I screamed. “Let him pass!”
“I can’t lose the laundry truck!” he yelled.
“We’ll be killed!”
“Don’t worry!” he hollered. “He wouldn’t dare run us down!”
I screamed louder, “Let him go by!”
“Look!” Malcolm shouted.
